Jane Wray

After leaving creative arts teaching, I had to listen to that perennial yearning and begin my own art practice. A couple of years ago, after much experimentation with oils, acrylics, graphite and charcoal, I discovered that pastels were the way for me to create beautiful art. All my work is now done using soft pastels. The subtlety and intensity of pure pigment is irresistible! I find the medium almost sculptural.
My work is contemporary realism but is quite diverse. Unlike most artists, my subjects vary wildly as diversity is renewal for me. I enjoy making social commentary at times, creating the whimsical or just capturing the beauty of our world. The challenge of a difficult subject and all the frustrations and elation that comes with that are essentials for my practice. I have been rewarded on many occasions with prizes for my work. Wendy Sharpe has commented that my work is ‘sensitive (and) skilful, at once soft and dramatic’.
I am a Member of Bowral Art Society and Friends of Campbelltown Art Centre.
