George Gittoes: Artist
George will be talking about the Yellow House and how from this early stage of his art he agreed with Picasso's maxim I do not seek, I find. Then he will explain the influence of Islamic art on his work since high school. He will demonstrate how bridges can be built through cultural activity between the Islamic and Western understanding. He will also discuss his love of ceramics and all that is decorative and how this has culminated in his Melting Pot series of ceramics, prints, drawings and paintings.
George will show some of his collection of ancient wooden fabric stamps and demonstrate how he has devised ways to incorporate them into all aspects of his new work. He will tell how his presence at the frontline of so many wars has lead him to believe we should make tea and not war - that is to say he believes peace can only come through dialogue and never through force or violence. The chat will end with a discussion of his new works The Secret and The Blindfolded leading the Blindfolded.
By the time of his talk the new book from Chapter and Verse and titled No Exit will be out and feature many excerpts from his illustrated diaries (they are very similar to those of Donald Friend). He will bring some of the original diaries to the talk and allow the audience to view them and share in his belief in keeping such important records - made with pen on paper rather than computer and word processor. Finally he will talk about his inner joy as an artist and how this is stronger than any of the sad and negative things he has witnessed during war. Hopefully the audience will share his belief in the importance of creativity in the face of destruction.
